Overview

The Department of Mathematics of Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) carries out scientific research and high quality education activities with its undergraduate, Masters and Doctorate Programs.

Duration of our undergraduate program is four years and the instruction language is English. 19 compulsory courses including Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Analytical Mechanics, Dynamical Systems, Numerical Analysis, Differential Equations and Computer programming are offered in the undergraduate curriculum. Our undergraduate curriculum is enriched by elective courses offered in various subjects related to Graph Theory, Geometric Topology, Number Theory and Cryptology. Also, each undergraduate student gains independent study and oral presentation experience under the supervision of a faculty member by the course “Scientific Research Project” that is a compulsory course offered at the 7th and the 8th semesters of the curriculum.

In the master and doctorate programs, students conduct research in pure or applied mathematics subjects that are aligned with the research interests of our faculty. The research interests of our faculty can be listed as Algebra and Number Theory, Linear and Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, Mathematical Physics, Hydrodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Harmonic Analysis, Operator Theory, Numerical Analysis, Cryptology and Coding Theory, and Topology and Knot Theory. Our undergraduate and graduate programs offer students the opportunity of gaining international internship and education experience in other institutions by student exchange programs such as the Erasmus Program and Mevlana Program.

There are currently 16 faculty members, 2 instructors, 20 research assistants, 21 doctoral students, 20 master’s degree students and 286 undergraduate students at the IZTECH Department of Mathematics. Our building consists of 5 lecture halls, 3 classrooms, 2 computer labs and 22 offices.

The IZTECH Department of Mathematics is among the qualified and innovative mathematics departments in Turkey with its young and dynamic academic staff whose research has a strong emphasis on pure and applied mathematics, mathematical applications in computer science and interdisciplinary studies related to science and technology. The mission of our undergraduate and graduate programs is to train scientists who will work in prestigious research and education institutions on mathematics and mathematical sciences. We aim to provide a solid mathematical background for students who plan a career in computer software, finance, informatics, economics and technology.
